  • Course Summary

    The purpose of the Graduate Seminar in Biochemistry & Cell Biology is two-fold:
    1. For each student to share information about the research being undertaken in his/her thesis project and receive scientific feedback;
    2. For each student to practice and improve communication skills for giving seminars, lectures, job interviews, etc., and receive feedback on his/her presentation.

    For second year students, the first written progress report is due at the beginning of the third semester of study (September 1), and must be provided to the research advisor by August 15 to enable time for feedback. The progress review that would be held at the end of the fourth semester is replaced by the Admission to Candidacy exam (A-exam). Starting in your third year in the PhD program, your written progress report is due to your advisor 2 weeks prior to your seminar. The final version of the progress report should be submitted to the Graduate Program Coordinator by 5 pm 1 week prior to the student’s Bios 581/582 presentation. The student prepares 5 copies of the final report – 3 for committee members (can be placed in mailboxes), 1 for the thesis advisor, and 1 for the Graduate Program Coordinator.

  • Attendance policy:

    Three unexcused absences in the semester will result in a grade of unsatisfactory in the course, which in turn will result in academic probation. Please request excused absences well ahead of time (e.g., the preceding Friday) via an email to the instructors and include a reasoned justification for the request. Copy the Graduate Program Coordinator, Sherry Vanderslice (sdv1@rice. edu), on the excused absence request. Documentation of attendance is provided by the evaluation forms that each student is expected to fill out for each presentation, so don’t forget to turn in those forms each time. Arrival to class more than 5 minutes late will be considered an absence.

  • Classroom etiquette:

    Standard seminar etiquette is required. As a reminder, all electronic devices must be turned off, and alcohol is not permitted in the classroom.

  • Accommodations for students with disabilities:

    Any student with a documented disability needing academic adjustments or accommodations is requested to speak with an instructor during the first two weeks of class. All discussions will remain confidential. Students with disabilities will need to also contact Disability Support Services in the Ley Student Center.
