Elementary Physics and Chemistry

This program is not taking applications at this time.

Elementary Physics and Chemistry is a one-week program for teachers of grades three through five that provides an introduction to physics and chemistry concepts as described in the TEKS/TAKS. Rice's only short-term summer offering, the program was developed for Houston ISD's HU-LINC Elementary Science Lead Teachers. G/T hours and Continuing Professional Education credit is provided.

Emphasis will be on pedagogy that is developmentally appropriate yet challenging, and includes hands-on lab activities and field studies. Strategies will be utilized that highlight inferential thinking that accompanies attempts to experiment and answer questions. The intended result is that teacher participants and subsequently their students will apply the knowledge learned to other situations, thereby multiplying the value of the information learned.

Participants in the institute attend the full week of activities to receive the associated instructional materials and credit for attendance, which includes G/T professional development credit (15 hours of creativity and 15 hours of differentiated curriculum). Participants in this program are invited to attend optional professional development sessions offered by Rice University during the academic year.

Funding
Elementary Physics and Chemistry is sponsored by theDepartment of Biochemistry and Cell Biology at Rice University. Primary funding to develop the project was initially provided in 2001 by Houston ISD as part of an effort among members of the Houston Area University/College Coalition to provide high-quality professional development aligned with the district’s urban systemic initiative (HU-LINC) funded by the National Science Foundation.  Additional funding to develop and offer the project during the summers of 2001 and 2002 was provided through an award to Rice from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute Biological Sciences Education Program (Project Director, Dr. Frederick Rudolph).  Starting with the Summer 2003 offering, the program is supported solely by Houston ISD funds available as a result of the district’s urban systemic initiative.
