The
Galveston Bay Project
We
are not accepting applications for this program at this time.
The Galveston Bay Project begins with a three-week
summer institute for K-8 teachers interested in learning more
about the Galveston Bay watershed. Now accepting applications
for its 9th session, the program focuses on the biological,
ecological, and geological issues of the area. While exploring
the impact of Houston's bayou system on the bay, participants
conduct an extensive water quality study. University and regional
specialists work with teachers in the classroom and at multiple
field sites to demonstrate how program materials can be used
to teach science and mathematics objectives (TEKS and TAKS) and
appropriately integrate technology at all levels of instruction.

Expectations of Participants
Teachers participate in a three-week summer institute as well as
in academic year follow-up sessions. The institute is based at
the HISD Center for Professional Development at The Rice School/La
Escuela Rice and includes numerous field sites. Typical summer
hours are from 8:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Monday through Friday (some
days are extended to accommodate field trips) with six-eight
school year sessions for invited speakers, field trips; some
contact is maintained through on-line formats. As a final product
of the summer institute, teacher teams produce and present unit
plans to demonstrate how they will incorporate the institute
content into their academic year instruction.

Administrative Support
Principals support teachers participating from their
campus by providing one release day during
the academic year to attend a follow-up session in late August

Funding
The Galveston Bay Project is sponsored by theDepartment of Biochemistry
and Cell Biology at Rice University. Funding to develop and offer the project
during its first eight years was provided through awards from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute Biological
Sciences Education Program (Project Director, Dr. Frederick Rudolph). Starting
in 2000, supplementary funding to continue the program to date
has been provided by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board’s
(THECB) Eisenhower Professional Development Grants program. Final
determination for funding of the 2003-2004 offering is pending
the outcome of the current THECB’s Teacher Quality/No Child Left
Behind Professional Development Grants competition.
