Precollege Student Programs

These programs provide exceptional learning experiences for K-12 students.

The Galveston Bay Project for Girls - is a two-week science summer day camp that annually serves 60 female students recruited from eight area middle schools. Instruction focuses on the biological and ecological characteristics of nearby Galveston Bay. Field explorations, computer technology and research skills are emphasized in this program. Female scientists are featured as guest speakers. Participants work toward completing a research project that is formally presented to their parents and fellow students as well as their home campus science teachers and administrators.

The South Texas Academy Summer Intern Program - is a two-week program designed for students enrolled in the South Texas Science Academy, a magnet school in the South Texas ISD in Mercedes, Texas.

The Milby Science Institute Intern Program - is a one-week program designed for students enrolled in the Milby Science Institute, a magnet program in HISD. Its design is similar to that of the South Texas Science Academy Summer Intern Program. Plans are underway to expand the program to a year-long schedule that will include company visits and exposure to various areas of science.

Expanding Your Horizons in Science and Mathematics - a one-day career awareness workshop for middle school female students and their parents and teachers from the Houston area, is sponsored annually by the West Harris County Branch of the American Association of University Women. Through HHMI funds, Rice University's Precollege Science Education Programs is a major sponsor of this event.  The Rice University School Mathematics Project also provides speakers and assistance in set-up for this event, held each April at The Rice School/La Escuela Rice.  Expanding Your Horizons brings in over xx female professionals as speakers, benefiting nearly 600 students each year.

DocPrep - is a week-long academic and enrichment program directed jointly by Baylor College of Medicine and Rice University. The goal of DocPrep is to enhance student's interest in careers in medicine and the health professions, providing information to help students pursue educational qualifications required to access such careers. Each summer for the past ten years, 60 outstanding juniors from the following three magnet high schools have been selected to participate: High School for Health Professions (HSHP), South Texas Independent School District, Mercedes; Science and Health Center, Corpus Christi, and the John B. Alexander Magnet for Health and Sciences, United Independent School District (UISD), Laredo, Texas.
