Birds of Galveston Bay

Brown Pelican
(Pelecanus occidentalis)

Interesting Facts:
These birds dive for their food in a spectacular twisting motion as they hit the water. Because of this repetitive splashing into the water the Brown Pelican has extra padding along its breast bone. This pelican was endangered because of the introduction of DDT through agriculture.

American White Pelican

(Pelecanus erythrorhynchos)

Interesting Facts: These pelicans feed differently from their brown pelican cousins. They fish in groups, by either corraling fish into a tight group or by forcing them against a solid wall such as a boat or pier. They take turns scooping fish out of the water and holding them in their pouch.
