Fish of Galveston Bay - Bottom Feeders

Catfish

Interesting Facts:
It uses its whisker-like barbels to forage for food along the muddy bottom.

Summer Flounder
Family: Bothidie

Interesting Facts: The flounder starts out its life as a normal fish with eyes on both sides. As it matures one eye migrates either to the left or the right of the body which results in both eyes on the same side -as seen in the picture. (Summer Flounder - left-eyed (see picture above) Winter Flounder - right-eyed. This adaptation allows the flounder to see predators from the bottom of the ocean. The flounder is also camouflaged. The top of the flounder blends in with the sand while the bottom is white in color.

Tongue Fish
Family: Cynoglossidae
Interesting Facts: Tend to be warm water fish. Are too small for commercial fishing.
