Science and Mathematics Institute

We are not accepting applications for this program at this time.

The Science and Mathematics Institute (SMI) provides a high-quality, on-going professional development experience for elementary teachers. This program began in 1999 as a National Science Foundation project aimed at improving educational opportunities in science and mathematics for female students. The institute addresses the needs of diverse student learners and focuses on concepts of measurement, problem-solving and reasonableness of solutions.

Teachers engage in hands-on laboratory and field studies to improve elementary students' process skills involved in carrying out authentic scientific and mathematics investigations. Workshop activities include:

  • Hands-on activities using materials you receive during the workshop!
  • Lots of opportunities to explore how students learn and to share your expertise with other teachers!
  • Real world activities and projects that interest real students!
  • Curriculum that works…it’s classroom tested!

Expectations of Participants
Teachers attend the three-week summer program (July 7-25 held in the Center for Professional Development at The Rice School/La Escuela Rice. Classes during the July session meet weekdays for a total of over 100 contact hours.  Homework assignments are completed after-hours.

Teachers continue to interact with Rice University staff throughout the school year (approximately once a month) through workshops, electronic conferences, and on-site support. Follow-up takes place after school hours as well as on Saturdays. Participation in the full year's activities is required.

Benefits to Campus and Participants
There are numerous benefits to participants in the Science and Mathematics Institute, including:
