Clostridium acetobutylicum is involved in biodegradation of nitroaromatic compounds such as TNT. Work is focused on studying features of hydrogenase reactions, which have been identified as the major TNT-transforming process in C. acetobutylicum. Some nitroreductase-like proteins are encoded in the clostridial genome and these genes have been overexpressed and the activity of the enzymes have been investigated.

Efforts to develop probes for identification and monitoring of TNT-degrading bacteria and their catabolic genes in the environment are on going.
