Ah.  Actually, I did fix my compass (although it took me a surprisingly
long time to figure out that I could), but I didn't think of unfixing
it here.  Silly me.  Anyway, I guess that the "alternate solution" that
I discovered is, in fact, a bug.

One thought about that panel:  I have a torch attachment (leg #794)
that I found inside a torso in the scrap heap, but it seems to lack
fuel.  The fact that it was hidden makes me think that it might be
useful.
