Here's a handful of games with fantasy / science fiction themes which
I think a beginner might enjoy. There's many more of course but I'm
resisting giving you an overwhelmingly big list.

(Note that you must download these files in 'binary' mode. You can cut
and paste the addresses for the .zip files straight from Free Agent
into your web-browser but for the .z5 and .gam files go to the
_directory_ containing the file then right-click on the required
filename and select save-as from the pop-up menu.)

Uncle Zebulon's Will - Magnus Olsson
ftp://ftp.gmd.de/if-archive/games/tads/zebulon2.zip

The Meteor, The Stone And A Long Glass Of Sherbet - Graham Nelson
ftp://ftp.gmd.de/if-archive/games/infocom/sherbet.z5

Glowgrass - Nate Cull
ftp://ftp.gmd.de/if-archive/games/competition97/tads/glow/glow.gam

John's Fire Witch - John Baker.
ftp://ftp.gmd.de/if-archive/games/pc/firwitch.zip

(I found 'Fire Witch' a bit difficult but its about to be reviewed on
rec.games.int-fiction as the 'IF Book of the Month' so you might want
to try it soon to see what people are talking about. There's
'walkthroughs for Fire Witch in the Solutions directory at the IF
Archive - ftp.gmd.de/if-archive - or you can ask for more subtle hints
for this or any other game in rec.games.int-fiction if you don't want
to ruin your enjoyment of the game which walkthroughs tend to do.)

The games I've mentioned are in either TADS or z-code format. To play
them you need an appropriate 'interpreter' program. For Windows 9X
users I suggest trying HTML TADS and Winfrotz for TADS and z-code
games (respectively).

ftp://ftp.gmd.de/if-archive/infocom/interpreters/frotz/WinFrotzR53.zip

Hope that helps!
