Antibacterial resistance is a great challenge to public health and contributes to a great number of deaths and infections. The microbial evolution studies in our lab on Gram-positive bacteria have shown that one of the main factors in the evolution of resistance to Tigecycline (an antibiotic of last resort) is the acquisition of deletions upstream of the gene that encodes TetM, a ribosomal protecting protein, which is also associated with horizontal gene transfer. In collaboration with Kathryn Beabout, I study the biochemical and biophysical factors of this resistance pathway.

It has been shown by our group and other researchers that the activation of LiaFSR proteins pathway is one of the main pathways to resistance against antibiotics that target the structure of bacterial cell membrane. In collaboration with Dr. Davlieva I am working to further elucidate the regulation of this pathway.
